Process Overview
- Enter the transaction amount in your local currency and present the device to the customer.
- The customer taps / inserts or swipes their card to determine whether their card supports DCC.
- If their card doesn't support DCC, the transaction is processed in the local currency.
- If DCC is supported, the amount in the customer card's currency is calculated from local amount.
- Then the amounts in both currencies (including mark-up) and the conversion rate are shown.
- The customer chooses to pay in either the local currency OR their card's currency.
- Once the customer makes their selection, the payment is processed and a receipt is printed.

How to offer DCC to customers
When a customer's card supports DCC, you should present the terminal to them and ask them to select from the two currency options provided. For example:
- "Would you like to pay in your home currency or the local currency?"
- "Please choose the currency you'd like to pay in."
The customer must select their preferred option.
It is never appropriate for you to choose the currency on behalf of the customer.
The customer must always make this choice for themselves.
Customer FAQs
Your customers may be unfamiliar with DCC. Use the follow information to better inform and help your customers at checkout:
How is the exchange rate calculated?
The exchange rate is sourced from Reuters Wholesale Interbank and is very competitive. The amount shown on screen is the amount that will be charged.
What is the best option for me?
The choice is yours. If you pay in your home currency, the amount shown is final and not subject to additional fees that may be applied by your card issuer.
Is the margin printed on the receipt a hidden charge?
No. When selecting DCC, the amount displayed on the terminal is the final amount charged in the currency shown, including the margin. The margin is the fee applied for converting the purchase amount into your home currency and this is rolled into the amount you agreed to pay.
I have used DCC in the past but was still charged by my bank
Some issuing banks may apply additional fees for cross-border transactions, with the level and type of fee varying from one bank to another. You can request clarification of any fees directly from your issuing bank.
