On 01 January 2026 at 00:00 EEST, Bulgaria will officially adopt the Euro (EUR) as its currency, replacing the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). From this date, all transactions in Bulgaria will be processed in Euros, affecting how businesses handle payments, settlements, and financial reporting for Bulgarian operations.
1.95583 BGN = 1 EUR.
What this means for you
If you are currently processing transactions in BGN, you already have the ability to process transactions in EUR. You must update your integration to submit transactions in EUR instead of BGN by the cut-off date and time.
Transactions submitted in BGN after the cut-off will be declined by card issuers.
Preparing for the transition
To ensure a smooth transition, we recommend scheduling a planned outage on your website ahead of the cut-off to:
- Update your prices from BGN to EUR.
- Prevent customers starting a payment session in BGN before the cut-off that will fail if completed after the cut-off (see FAQs below).
- Ensure your systems are ready to process transactions in EUR.
From 01 January 2026 at 00:00 EEST, all new payment requests sent to our gateway must be in EUR, not BGN.
FAQs
General
All requests submitted in BGN after 00:00 EEST on 01 January 2026 will be rejected. You must submit all new transactions in EUR.
Authorised transactions in BGN can be settled up until 31 January 2026. Settlement is still subject to the same conditions as described in our card settlement guidance.
If you update the amount of an authorised AUTH or REFUND transaction following the cut-off:
- Partial reversal (updating to a lower amount): We will attempt to reverse the difference in BGN.
- Cancelled (settle status 3): We will attempt to reverse the entire amount in BGN, releasing the reserved funds back to the customer's bank account.
BGN transactions authorised using DCC before the cut-off will settle as normal until 28 February 2026 using the rate calculated by the currency conversion provider when authorised.
- Authorised BGN payouts processed before 01 January 2026 will be settled in BGN as normal.
- All new payouts processed for Bulgarian customers from 01 January 2026 onwards must be processed in EUR.
Hosted Payment Pages
All AUTH requests submitted in BGN after 00:00 EEST on 01 January 2026 will be rejected. We recommend scheduling a planned outage before this cut-off to prevent customers from starting a hosted Payment Pages session that they cannot successfully complete in time.
